I grew up in rural Vermont playing violin and guitar by ear, and I've spent a good part of my life on a stage or in front of a room.

After two years in Eastern Europe, where I learned Hungarian, I went to the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a naval officer. I've coached wrestling at the Division I level, taught hundreds of people to play guitar, and co-founded companies, including a nationwide lender whose board I still sit on. I also founded The Windstorm Institute, an independent research institute, and Windstorm Labs, its engineering side.

Then the tools arrived and I threw myself in. I started building by voice: first Windy Word, a free dictation app, then books, then a whole set of software platforms. There were no manuals for any of it, so I learned by doing it every day. When friends started asking how, coaching them felt like the most natural thing in the world, and it grew from there.

Most of what I know, someone else taught me. I'm still learning this one every day too.
